Amphenol Socapex connectors with integrated backshells are a two-in-one solution. These lightweight and low-profile solutions offer EMI performance and save time during the installation. Indeed, it’s possible to do a 360° shielding without the need of an additional backshell. We will detail in this article the different steps to realize this shielding operation, those are illustrated in our video : Integrated backshell shielding procedure.
Introduction
Contacts are crimped and inserted inside the connectors. You check the following videos to perform those operations : MIL-DTL-38999 Connectors : Contact Crimping Instructions & MIL-DTL-38999 Connectors - Contact Insertion Instructions
Equipment
In order to perform the following operations, it’s necessary to take:
- A heat shrink boot
- A tightening collar (or band-it)
- A banding tool
- A small wire cutter
- The connector with crimped contacts already inserted (the braid is refolded on at the back)
How to choose the band-it ?
According to our part numbers, two band-it are possible. The connectors with the deviation F472 are compatible with standard band-it (6mm), part number 072952. It’s necessary to use the tool 809952.
We also offer micro band-it versions (3mm large), our part number 895693 pre-coiled, that should be used with tool 809985. Those can be used with connector references that ends by the modification code F472A.
1st step : Braid position
Bring back the shield above the rear part of the connector. It’s necessary that the braid cover entirely the rear at 360°. Avoid any holes or braid damage.
2nd step : Band-it position
It’s necessary to do double coiled with the band-it and it’s important to respect the correct direction.
Insert the band-it inside the tool (respect also the direction) and tighten the band-it with the “Tension” lever. The band-it is shrinking on the braid. It’s important to tighten the band-it on the knurling (see below picture). It’s necessary to have enough length over the band-it to cover entirely the back of the connector and then trim excess of braid.
Once it’s not possible to tighten the band-it, press the “Cut out” lever to cut the band-it.
3rd step : Trim excess of braid strands
Cut the excess with a cutting tool.
4th step : Position of the heat-shrink molded part (not shown in the video)
Position the heat-shrink part with the narrow side on cable side. The molded part should have no deformation, no holes and should be positioned inside the groove.
Then, it should be heated to reduce it at the back of the connector (or at the back of the backshell if it’s not an integrated backshell connector) and mould the cable. It’s better to apply the heat from the connector to the cable.
You can design your own integrated backshell connector by using our configurator available on our product page : Integrated backshell 38999 connector EMI shielding | Amphenol Socapex
