A connector is an electromechanical device used to join electrical terminations and create an electrical circuit.
Connectors work in pairs. Each pair is composed by a plug and a receptacle, one with a male insert and the other with a female insert.
These are two important informations :
- Plug usually refers to the mobile connector (on the cable).
- The receptacle usually refers to the "more fixed" connector of a pair (on a panel, box, etc...)
The role of contacts in connectors
The contacts are used to transmit information signals within a connector. However, it is possible to have male contacts independently on a plug or on a receptacle.
In both cases, depending on the male or female contacts, a male plug mates with a female receptacle and inversely.
The importance of coding
Please note that for the coupling of plugs and receptacles, they must have the same coding : N, A, B, C, D, E.
